Write Letters for Repeal with your Community!

It will soon be time for us to let our senators know that we want them to do away with the death penalty. One of the best ways to get your senator’s attention is with a handwritten letter. It’s quick and easy to write your senator a letter to let him or her know why you think that the death penalty is a failed, broken system. These letters make a big difference! Last year, a filibuster prevented a vote to abolish the death penalty. This year, let’s make sure our voices are heard, so our elected officials vote to abolish the death penalty once and for all! If you can help get a group of people together to write letters at your church or in your community, please contact Tim at

Good News out of South Dakota!

Just like Nebraskans, our neighbors in South Dakota are becoming frustrated with the cost of the death penalty and the risks it poses to innocent people. In fact, one of our recent events with Curtis McCarty was even covered in the Rapid City Journal! Now, a South Dakota lawmaker is bringing death penalty abolition before the Legislature. This Tuesday, Rep. Steve Hickey of Sioux Falls announced that he will ask the South Dakota Legislature to repeal the death penalty in 2014. Rep. Hickey, who is also a pastor, said that he changed his mind about the death penalty after fresh reflection on the Bible and on Jesus’s teachings about retributive justice. Coverage of Curtis McCarty's Nebraska Speaking Tour

Curtis McCarty wrapped up his speaking tour throughout Nebraska last month with stops in Schuyler, Alliance, Chadron, and Valentine. At each stop, Curtis shared the story of how he was wrongfully convicted of murder and spent 21 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit– 19 of those years on Oklahoma’s death row. Crowds packed the room at each of Curtis’s stops as he recounted the bad forensics and prosecutorial misconduct that sent him to prison, as well as the lucky break that saved him from execution. If you weren’t able to make it out to hear Curtis last month, you can read his story in the Schuyler Sun or watch the story on him from KHAS-TV News 5. When you’re finished, please share
