Robert Goes HomeAfter I met Robert and recognized his incredible, deep faith, his remorse over the terrible killings he had committed twenty years earlier, his total surrender to the awesome, transforming power of God's love in a human soul, all the good he was accomplishing on death row, I painted this picture. I wanted to show Robert's humble, triumphal entry into glory. I was able to show Robert a photo of the painting. He loved it! When I showed it to a friend, she couldn't make out the "brown object" in the lower, right hand corner. She said it looked like a toaster. And Robert, being Robert, I was able to tell him this. Oh, did he laugh! "Yep! A toaster!", he said. "A POP-UP toaster! Gonna pop me right up to heaven!" On the morning of his execution, he was still teasing about the "pop-up toaster!" ![]() |
